Professional Tool Reviews for Pros

Professional industrial mechanics know the frustration of encountering seized-up nuts and bolts, especially when there’s just no room for a breaker bar. The Metabo HPT 3/4-Inch High-Torque impact wrench is one of several heavy hitters on their MultiVolt lineup aiming to tackle tough jobs when it matters most. Pneumatic Torque Gun

This high-torque impact wrench definitely lives up to its name. The brushless motor churns out 1,401 ft-lbs of fastening torque and a staggering 1,770 ft-lbs of breakaway torque. It has four speed modes and tops out at 1,500 RPMs with an impact rate of 2,600 BPM. These stats make it the most powerful model in Metabo HPT’s current lineup.

For the most part, the speed control panel remains relatively unchanged from the Metabo HPT WR36DA. The biggest difference is they included an Auto Stop mode rather than a LED light control. We’re glad they stuck with the foot mounted control panel because it’s easy to make adjustments on the fly without too much extra movement.

The Auto Stop mode works in both forward and reverse. When fastening, the tool will automatically stop within 1.2 seconds after it starts impacting to help prevent overtightening. In reverse, there are two functions depending on how you pull the trigger.

If you fully depress the trigger, the tool will pause when the bolt is loose and then restart in low speed after 0.5 seconds. If you pull the trigger halfway, the speed will automatically decrease to help prevent dropping nuts and bolt when loosening them.

Depending on what you’re used to, the Metabo HPT WR36DF 3/4-inch impact wrench may seem a little on the heavy side. It weighs 6.9 pounds as a bare tool and 9.1 pounds with a 4.0Ah MultiVolt battery. The weight isn’t overwhelming, but you can probably skip arms at the gym after using this all day. All jokes aside, it’s actually right in line with other cordless 3/4-inch wrenches designed for heavy-duty use.

The profile doesn’t stray too far from the norm. It measures 8.75 inches from tip to tail and stands 11.75 inches tall with the battery attached.

Ergonomically speaking, we really don’t have any complaints. The grip is pretty stout, and the textured rubber overmold helps you maintain a secure grip in spite of sweat and grease. They also added a rubber head casing to help protect the tool and whatever you’re working on.

Since this high-torque wrench is intended for high-demand jobs, the anvil is fitted with both a friction ring and a through-hole. The through-hole, combined with a retainer pin and o-ring, provides an extra layer of strength and helps prevent damage to the socket. Personally, I prefer this combination over a pin-detent anvil, but that’s just my preference.

The Metabo HPT WR36DF retails for $299 as a bare tool. At the time we’re writing this article, there are no kit options available, so be sure to pick up a battery and charger.

Metabo HPT backs this impact wrench with a lifetime warranty.

In terms of power, the Metabo HPT high-torque impact wrench has plenty to offer, but it doesn’t stop there. This ergonomics and design are on point with what we expect from a professional brand, and the adding of an Auto Stop mode truly rounds out the feature set. Overall, the WE36DF is extremely capable, and for the money, it’s hard to pass up.
